2026 Week 27 Filipino Value Focus: CONVICTION

Have you ever been in a position where you were compelled to choose something that was against your convictions? Or a decision to either go with the flow or stand firmly on what you believe in? Notable men in the past and in the present are known for their great convictions. Martin Luther King Jr., a Nobel Peace Prize winner and a champion in advancing the civil rights of the people, once said, “I would rather be a man of conviction than a man of conformity.” Mahatma Gandhi, another icon in inspiring movements for civil rights and freedom, said, “A ‘No’ uttered in conviction is better than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or worse, to avoid trouble.” James Freeman Clarke, an author and an advocate against slavery, said, “Strong convictions precede great actions.” With these words about conviction, how would you define it on your own?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "conviction" as an unshakable belief in something without need for proof or evidence or a strong persuasion or belief. These are principles set by ourselves that we hold onto and are sometimes non-negotiable. When our conviction is violated, we feel that we are also devalued. When we face temptations and other instances where our convictions are shaken, we too feel that our person is shaken. Our convictions must not be shaken lest we stand on shaky ground.

Let us not also be an avenue to shake other people’s conviction. If we are in the high ranks, our accountability is higher in making sure that those below us must be guided to do what is right, what is just, and what is fair. If we are in the rank and file, let us not allow our conviction to be shaken just because there are people in the higher positions who want us to do wicked, corrupt, or illegal acts. Whether we are poor or rich, in the higher or lower echelon, in the position or not, there is only one judge who will convict us. Listen to that still small voice inside you and do what is right as if you were standing before God, before the people, and before yourself.

If we strongly believe that a good name is better than silver or gold, then do not compromise or give in to bribery, graft, corruption, or other illegal dealings or transactions that would taint not only your name but also the people or the agency or organization you are representing. Have the conviction to stand for what is right. Have the fear of God, knowing that nothing is hidden in His sight and in due time, when our days are over here on earth, we will be judged according to how we conducted ourselves on earth. Even in the small aspect of our lives, we must heed our convictions. We should not suppress it lest we become callous. We must act on it so that when greater challenges come, we will not be shaken, and we will stand on a firm ground. The choice is ours today—strengthen your convictions? or weaken your conscience? It’s all under your hands. ​

ACTION PLAN

1. Reflect if there are areas in your life where you have overridden your convictions. Determine how important these areas are. Will these affect your future decisions, or would they weaken your moral infrastructure? Write your reflection in your journal. 
   
2. From No. 1, determine some steps for how you could rebound to the state where your convictions in these areas are strong. Resolve to practice the steps when the challenge comes. 
   
3. ​How can you help others have a stronger conviction? If you are in the higher ranks, what can you do to reinforce the strong conviction in your subordinates or co-workers? If you are in the lower ranks, how can you help your superior have stronger convictions? Write some steps which are achievable and resolve that you would follow it when circumstance comes 

DECLARATION

We are a people with strong conviction. We shall not bribe, steal, kill, deceive, or lie, nor tolerate anyone who does. We shall stand for what is right. We will not allow our convictions to be shaken just because others have become callous. We are God’s instruments and warriors for righteousness, peace, and justice to be on the land. 

​PRAYER

Lord, we come before You, and we ask forgiveness if we have not heeded Your Holy Word, which makes our convictions stronger. Allow us to have a strong inner person so that we cannot be swayed to the left or to the right nor be tempted by things that are not pleasing to Your sight. Teach us Your ways so that we can strongly hold on to them and let them be a standard in our walk here on Earth. We desire that our lives will be a blessing to You and to our countrymen. Help us also to live a life worthy of emulation so that the people around us—our coworkers, our family members, and our neighbors—will also have strong conviction—the conviction that comes from You. Amen.
